BERLIN — Berlin/Gorham 10U Cal Ripken opened the District Three tournament this weekend against Great North Woods.

This was a very exciting game and a great way to start the tournament. Berlin/Gorham lost the coin toss and was up to bat first and came out scoring three runs in the top of the first inning.

Great North Woods responded with three of their own. Berlin/Gorham went up by one run in the second and stayed that way until the fourth inning when both teams scored two, leaving Berlin/Gorham still up by one.

In the fifth inning Berlin/Gorham scored two and then in the sixth inning Berlin/Gorham bat's came alive and brought 12 batters to the plate and scored seven for a final of 15-5 in favor of Berlin/Gorham.

Game two on Saturday morning was a great showing for the Berlin/Gorham team vs. Littleton.

Berlin/Gorham bats were alive and defense was flawless. Littleton struggled with pitching and walked a few but when they threw a strike, Berlin/Gorham was all over it. Final score after three and a half innings was 14-0 in favor of Berlin/Gorham.

Game three on Saturday was a great pitchers' duel with plenty of strikeouts from both teams and great defense. Littleton came out in the first and scored one run, which proved to be the winning run. Great North Woods threatened many times with bases loaded but could never capitalize. Littleton scored two more in the bottom of the fifth inning and held off Great North Woods to eliminate them and go to the finals with Berlin/Gorham.

On Sunday (another beautiful day) it was Berlin/Gorham vs. Littleton. Littleton had to win the first game to force a second game. Both teams came ready to play and fight the heat. Berlin/Gorham started by scoring one in the first inning and one in the third. This was another great game with great pitching and defense on both sides.

Littleton was not ready to go home and scored one in the fourth inning and four in the fifth to take the lead, 6-2. Littleton shut down Berlin/Gorham with the bases loaded in the bottom of the fifth inning. Littleton scored one more in the top of the sixth and Berlin/Gorham had one more chance to score runs and go ahead of Littleton to win the tournament. Berlin/Gorham scored two runs and fell short as Littleton won 6-4 to force a second and final game.

In the final game, Berlin/Gorham came out with their bats and ready to go, scoring two runs in the top of the first inning. Littleton answered by scoring two of their own. Berlin/Gorham, however, changed gears and scored five in the second inning and never looked back. Kolin Melanson struck out batters before being removed from pitching duties. Littleton kept fighting and never gave up, forcing Berlin/Gorham to play all six innings but Berlin/Gorham was too strong in the end and won 13-4.

Berlin/Gorham took the District 3 title and will go on to the state tournament in Exeter. The first game in that tournament is tentatively scheduled for Saturday, July 2, at 10 a.m.
