BERLIN — The second rung of the Division III playoffs saw the fourth seeded Lady Mountaineers ousting the matrons from Mascenic 12-0 on Thursday.

Manning the pitcher's circle was the insurmountable Jen Landers, who shut out the visitors over six innings with 10 strikeouts.

It was clear who's house it was as Berlin came out to a 7-0 lead after just the first two innings. Big Red put four runs readily away in the bottom of the first inning. The bases were loaded after a Chelsey Caron single, a base on balls from Meagan Accardi and an infield base hit by Landers. Emily Picard had the big bat to belt in two runs with a base hit. The play saw an attempted throw-out at the plate that turned into an error and allowed a speedy Landers to land home for the 3-0 lead. Mary Cordwell continued the Berlin offensive with a grounder to score Picard for a 4-0 lead.

The Mountaineers pulled a two-out rally in the bottom of the second inning. Landers had reached on a fielder's choice that was soon followed by a Picard single and a Cordwell base on balls to load the diamond. A wild pitch gave Landers the chance to hit the plate again followed by an error batted by Shaeleigh Valliere to send in two more runs to make it 7-0.

In the top of the fourth inning there was a nice defensive play in which the ladies in red caught Mascenic in a pickle to keep them off the offensive.

The bottom of the fourth saw a homer off the bat of Picard, who was batting aces going three for three.

All it would take at this point were four more runs to end the game and the Berlin girls earned that gift in the bottom of the sixth.

The mercy started with Cait Reardon singling on and Caron reaching on an error. That was followed by a single from Accardi that landed in the center field pocket for an RBI. Landers then sniped an RBI single into centerfield and Picard drew in a walk to load the bases. Cordwell did her job right with an RBI single to right field and then Myra Arsenault wore a pitch to force in a run and win the game.

For the game, Mascenic's Samantha Bilodeau went the distance allowing the 12 runs on 11 hits. Bilodeau walked two and struck out four. Two errors by the Viking defense were costly in that Berlin scored runs after both errors.

Defensively, the Mounties committed just one error and looked sharp all-around. Landers allowed just three hits, walked just one, and set down 10 on strike outs, including the first five outs of the game.

The Mountaineers were in quarterfinal action after deadline on Monday against Winnisquam. The semifinals are today, June 10, at Plymouth State at 7 p.m. and the finals are Saturday, June 13, at 2 p.m., also at Plymouth State.
