GORHAM — The NECAP results for the Milan Village School (MVS) and the Gorham-Randolph-Shelburne Cooperative School District schools — Ed Fenn School (EFS), Gorham Middle School, (GMS) and Gorham High School (GHS) — are in.

The Errol Consolidated Elementary School's results are not included because of low enrollment.

"In looking at the NECAP data from year to year we become concerned when we have students that are partially and substantially below proficient," pointed out SAU 20 Superintendent Paul Bousquet. "Staff members analyze the information and see what areas and skills need to be remediated for individual students.

"Staff members then work to provide remediation designed to move students from where they are, to increase their skills, and kto bring them forward as far as they can go in order for them to be successful," Bousquet explained.

"The NECAP test is only one measure-assessment of student success," he noted.

"Our districts use multiple assessments in order to determine the needs of the individual student," Bousquet explained. Other assessments include NWEA-MAPS tests, Aimsweb, Developmental Reading Assessments, Running Records and locally generated evaluations, all of which are administered in order to get a clearer picture of where students are academically and instructionally.

"In addition, if areas of weakness are determined to be in one particular area, writing for example, then this may be a focus for all groups and all teachers as an area of improvement for our instruction and our students," Bousquet pointed out.

"Any drop of NECAP scores in any area — reading, writing and math — is taken very seriously by our staff members as they work to assist students to attain the skills needed to be academically successful," he said.

"When I look at the NECAP 2011 scores (on left) and compare them to the 2012 scores (on right), I see that both reading (top table) and math (bottom table) have had a decline," he said. "These are areas that need more analysis of the data and extra attention. All staff members in our schools explore ways to improve in order to meet the needs of our students. Our goal for all our schools is to move students forward as far as they can go." Gorham High School had gains in both these areas, with 95 percent reaching proficient or above in reading, up 17 percent from 2011 scores, and 59 percent in math, up by percent from 2011. Writing scores were also up at all four schools in SAU 20.
