January 09, 2013 LANCASTER — The Coös County commissioners voted unanimously on Wednesday to authorize County Attorney John McCormick to hire Stephen A. Murray of Wolfeboro as assistant county attorney, likely with a start date later this month.
Murray held this same post in Carroll County for over five years in an office with two assistant county attorneys plus a Deputy County Attorney.
"I was impressed that McCormick said that he really needed someone who could hit the ground running; Murray certainly fulfills that requirement," said County Commissioner Tom Brady of Jefferson, who chairs the board of commissioners, in a telephone interview.
The county attorney's office has been staffed with only one lawyer since then-County Attorney Robert "Bob" Mekeel resigned on Nov. 7, the day after Election Day. McCormick, who served as the county's sole assistant county attorney, was elected on Nov. 6 on the Democratic ticket.
The county delegation of state representatives later voted to appoint McCormack to the top slot, retroactive to Nov. 7.
Murray, a Republican, was not successful in his run for County Attorney in Carroll County, losing to former County Attorney Robin Gordon, a Democrat. Back in 1995, Gordon served as Coös County's first assistant county attorney.
According to Murray's campaign website, he worked as a business analyst and call center manager for Capital One before earning his law degree from the University of Richmond School of Law. Previously he earned a B.S. in math at UNH and a Master's in economics at the University of Virginia.
Murray also pointed out that he has received extensive training in trial advocacy, impaired driving, and domestic violence from the N. H. Department of Justice, the National District Attorney's Association and the N. H. Bar Association.
