Smith Hydro offline 30 days following Nov. 6th fire

January 02, 2013
BERLIN — The Smith Hydro unit at the City's entrance was taken out of service at 12:30 pm. on Election Day, Tuesday, Nov. 6, as a result of a fire, replied Martin Murray, Senior Corporate News Representative of Public Service of New Hampshire (PSNH) in response to an e-mail inquiry.

"The fire was within a cabinet housing electronic switching gear and was confined to that area," Murray explained. "The cause of the fire was found to be a failed piece of equipment that had been installed as a result of a fire in 2011."

The equipment was still under warranty, however, and was therefore replaced by the installer at no cost to PSNH.

The unit returned to service at 12:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 5.

Smith Hydro's generating capacity is 15.2 megawatts (MW). It went into service in 1948 following World War II. Located near the confluence of the Dead and Androscoggin Rivers, the dam's height is 29 feet. There are walkways and scenic overlooks at the site.
