Local ballots will see a few contested races

REGION — The filing period ended for candidates to submit their names for the different positions in Alton, Barnstead and New Durham last Friday and there are several new names and contested races that will be voted during the March election.

In Alton, there are two contested races on the town side and one contested race on the school side.

Four people have filed to run for the pair of three-year positions on the board of selectmen and they are incumbent Loring Carr, Robert Daniels, Stephen Miller and Lawrence Tilly.

The other contested race in town involves the single three-year spot as a water commissioner and they are Charles Adams Jr., Richard "Dick" Glidden and Edward "Buddy" Peterson.

The uncontested races and people running for the positions in Alton include: Nancy Merrill, who is running for the three-year position of trustee of trust funds, Shirley Lane and H. John Pohas Jr., running for the two three-year positions as library trustees, Bonnie Burgess, running for the three-year position as cemetery trustee, Stewart Keefe, running for the one-year position of cemetery trustee, Miles "Andy" McLeod and Lawrence Tilly, running for the pair of three-year positions on the budget committee, Ruth Messier, running for the two-year position on the same committee, Robert Daniels, running for the one-year position on the same committee, Thomas Hoopes and Raymond Howard Jr. running for the pair of three-year positions on the planning board and Lou LaCourse and Timothy Morgan, running for the pair of three-year positions on the zoning board of adjustment.

On the school side, incumbent Krista Argiropolis, Carlos Martinez and Christine Michaud-Tilly are running for the two three-year positions on the Alton School Board and no one filed for the one-year positions of school moderator and school clerk.

In New Durham, the only contested race is for the single three-year position on the board of selectmen, with David Swenson and Robert Kroepel running against each other.

The uncontested races and people running in New Durham include: Carole Ingram, running for the three-year position of town clerk, Scott Drummey, running for the three-year position on the planning board, Michele Kendrick, running for the three-year position as cemetery trustee, Richard McCormack and Angela Manning-Welch, running for the pair of three-year positions as library trustee, Richard Leonard, running for the one-year position as library trustee and Lois Parker, running for the three positions as trustee of the trust funds.

In Barnstead, there are several contested races on the town side and the school side.

On the town side, Shelli Vardaro, Bethany Drew, incumbent David Kerr, Joyce Parsons, Gordon Preston and Timothy Shea are running for the two three-year positions on the board of selectmen, Cynthia Treadwell and Teresa Scahill are running for three-year position of town clerk/tax collector and Bruce Marriott and Kevin Genest are running for the three-year position of library trustee.

Uncontested races in town include: Jeffrey Pruyne Jr., who is running for the three-year position on the planning board, with the other position vacant, Paul Landry, who is running for the three-year position on the budget committee, with the other spot vacant and Elaine Swinford, who is running for the one-year position of overseer of the public welfare.

Additionally, no filings were received for the two-year position on the budget committee and the three-year position of trustee of the trust funds.

On the school side, incumbent Keith Couch and Kevin Genest are running for the one-year position on the school board, and incumbent Eunice Landry, David Brown, David Finethy, Kevin Genest and Kathy Grillo are running for the two three-year positions on the school board.

No filings were received for the position of school district clerk or school district treasurer, and Vernon "Chris" Hipkiss is running unopposed for the one-year position of school district moderator.
