ALTON — Alton Back to School Night will be held at Alton Central School on Monday, Aug. 27, from 6 to 7 p.m.

Teachers will be handing out curriculum documents and some teachers will be doing scavenger hunts.

The Alton PTSA will have a booth set up and the Boy and Girl Scouts will also be on site.

The decision was suggested when developing the calendar and the administration and the school board agreed that switching from an "open house" to a back to school night before school started would take a lot of pressure off of the students.

"It makes the students feel a lot better about the first day, Principal Sydney Leggett said. "So far, the feedback has been positive from the parents."

Leggett said that the feedback from staff at ACS has also been great.

"Teachers like the idea of the kick-off too," Leggett added.

The first day of sports will be on the second day of school, Wednesday, Aug. 29. Permission slips are required and will be available during back to school night and on the school Web site, www.alton.k12.nh.us. Soccer will meet on the field (with boys on the left and girls on the right). Volleyball and cross country will both meet in the gym. For the first week, all practices will be from 3 to 4:30 p.m.

The school recently sent parents and guardians a list of school supplies for students. For students in Kindergarten through fifth grade, the school recommends a backpack and a pencil case/box.

For sixth grade students, an additional set of three single-subject notebooks is recommended. For seventh and eighth grade students, a pair of 1.5-inch three binders and one single-subject notebook is recommended.

A calculator is also recommended, but scientific calculators aren't necessary at these grade levels.

If for any reason, parents or guardians are having difficulty obtaining school supplies, the school participates in Project Backpack and school supply drives and can provide assistance.

Contact Kristine Simone in the main office at 8750-7500, as the school's goal is have each child equipped for a successful school year.

The school recently announced the prices for their meals for the 2012-2013 school year and they include lunches prices as follows: $2.05 for elementary lunch, $2.25 for middle school lunch, $3 for adult lunch. The breakfast prices are: $1.25 elementary students, $1.50 for middle school students and $2 for adults. The cost for milk is $.50.
